Zellige is an ancient art that has been passed down for generations. Maâlems (or master craftsmen,) start learning the art of zellige as young apprentices, and it takes them several years to perfect the art. The clay is harvested in the region of Fez, and molded by hand. It is then left out to dry in the hot, Moroccan sun before being glazed in a kiln made from olive pits. Talk about a creative process!
